Do Christians need marriage counseling, or is prayer enough?

By Austin & Rachel Holt, founders of The Conscious Christian Marriage

The Short Answer

Prayer is essential, but Scripture never treats prayer as a substitute for wisdom, counsel, and action. Proverbs says in an abundance of counselors there is safety, and James says faith without works is dead. Most Christian couples do best when they pray and also get faith-centered guidance, concrete tools, and practice alongside other couples.

Where the "just pray" idea comes from

Many of us were told "you don't need a counselor, you need the Great Counselor." The heart behind that is good. Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor. But He also works through people, wisdom, and obedience. Nobody applies that logic to a broken leg or a business plan. We pray and we act.

What Scripture says about counsel

Proverbs 11:14 says that in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 15:22 says plans fail without counsel. Iron sharpens iron. James 2:17 says faith without works is dead. Prayer and practical help are partners, not rivals.

Praying and getting to work

We call it relying on God and also getting to work. Pray for your spouse and for your own heart. Then take the next faithful step: a real conversation, an agreement, a repair, a daily check-in. Waiting on God while avoiding the work often looks like faith but works like avoidance.

What good help looks like

Help that serves a Christian marriage is built on Scripture, points the work at each spouse first, and gives you tools you can use tonight. It is ongoing rather than an hour every other week, and it surrounds you with couples who are walking the same road. That is the model we built at CCM.

Where CCM fits

Inside the CCM Members Coaching Program, couples work through this live every week with Austin and Rachel Holt, in separate husbands and wives calls, and in a private community of couples who are all in. Membership is $297 per month per couple. You can apply at consciouschristianmarriage.com/apply, or reach out to Austin, Rachel, or a CCM coach with questions first.

Common questions

Is it a lack of faith to get help for my marriage?

No. Seeking wise, biblical guidance is an act of faith and humility. Scripture repeatedly commends it.

What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

Counseling is usually hourly and problem-focused. CCM coaching is ongoing, faith-centered, and practical, with live calls, tools, and community.

Where can I start?

Apply for the CCM Members Coaching Program, or contact Austin, Rachel, or a CCM coach with questions before you decide.
