Marriage Help

Where can pastors and ministry couples get marriage help?

By Austin & Rachel Holt, founders of The Conscious Christian Marriage

The Short Answer

Pastors and ministry couples often carry their marriage struggles alone because they are usually the ones giving help, not receiving it. They need a confidential, Christ-centered setting outside their own church, where they can be honest without risking their role. Christian marriage coaching communities like Conscious Christian Marriage give ministry couples that room, along with practical tools to protect their marriage from ministry pressure.

The pressure behind the pulpit

Ministry marriages carry weight most people never see. The congregation watches. The schedule never ends. The pastor's spouse often has nobody to talk to who is not also in the church. And the expectation that the pastor's marriage should be a model can make it feel impossible to admit it is struggling.

Your marriage is your first ministry

One of the convictions we repeat often: your marriage is your first ministry. Not a support function for the real ministry. When the marriage is neglected for the sake of the church, both eventually suffer.

Healthy ministry couples protect the marriage on purpose: protected nights, clear agreements about what church work comes home, and honest check-ins about how each spouse is actually doing.

Finding a safe room

Ministry couples need somewhere outside their own congregation to be fully honest. Inside CCM, pastors and church leaders sit alongside business owners, physicians, and other couples who are all in on Christ. What is said in the room stays in the room.

In episode 45 of our podcast, Jonathan and Ashley Hardy talk openly about the pressure ministry puts on a marriage.

Help for your whole church

Many pastors also want better marriage resources for their congregation. Austin and Rachel speak at churches and offer free church resources, including Marriage Ministry in a Box, so churches can build a marriage ministry without starting from scratch.
